The Zambartas family strongly believes in ecological and social responsibility. Wine is a beautiful expression of the grapes that we harvest and ultimately a ‘gift of nature’. Therefore, we are very conscious about the importance of a balanced relationship between man and nature. Cyprus is vulnerable to the increased effects of climate change and bio-diversity loss, and we aim to do everything in our power to preserve and protect our natural environment.
We apply ecological friendly practices throughout grape and wine production as well as in its distribution methods. Constant planning and improvement enable us to employ more efficient production methods with fewer resources spent.
We respect the micro-ecosystem of the vineyards by not using synthetic pesticides to control pests and fungi. We use organic approved fertilisers or cover crops to enrich the soils. All grapes are hand harvested and other vineyard operations are performed with limited mechanisation, so carbon emissions from agricultural practices are reduced.
Due to Cyprus’ severe water shortage we reduce drip-irrigation only to low altitude young vineyards, to help them develop through the tough first years. In the winery we use a minimum amount of water necessary via specialized pressure systems. The heat insulation of our winery building guarantees less consumption of energy to keep the winery cool, a necessary part of good winemaking technique.
In 2015 we installed photovoltaics on the roof our winery, and we are now using Cyprus’ ever shining sun to generate the majority of the electricity we need at the winery. Another step closer towards being a ‘green’ winery!
You can rest assured that every bottle of Zambartas wine you enjoy, has been produced with the conservation of our precious environment in mind.
In 2020 we will be launching a new initiative focussing on our planet. We are working on it and cannot wait to share it with you soon!
